In 1973, Richard Novak, Doug Haut, and Jay Shuirman were three surfer friends struggling to sell their surfing products until they decided to incorporate the skating community into their business model. Since this decision, Santa Cruz has been leading the skating community in innovative designs in such products like their River Road Wheels. These wheels incorporated the world's first precision ball bearings within the design. This design is one example of Santa Cruz being at the forefront of skating innovation.
